Clean Product Photos for Marketplace Listings
Most marketplaces want the same thing from a listing image: the product, sharp and well lit, on a plain white or transparent background. If you sell more than a handful of items, paying a studio for every photo adds up quickly, and cutting each one out by hand in an editor is slow. This guide covers the full loop — how to shoot so the background comes off cleanly, how to remove it in your browser, and how to export something that passes marketplace review.
Shoot so the cut-out succeeds
Background removal quality is mostly decided before the software ever runs. The model separates the subject from the background by contrast and edges, so the more your product stands apart from what is behind it, the cleaner the result.
Three habits make the biggest difference. First, put distance between the product and the backdrop — half a metre is enough. This softens backdrop shadows and stops the model from reading the backdrop texture as part of the item. Second, pick a backdrop colour that contrasts with the product: a dark item on a light sheet, a light item on a mid-grey one. Avoid photographing a white product on white. Third, light from two sides if you can. A single hard light throws a strong shadow that clings to the product's outline, and that shadow is the most common cause of leftover fringes on the edge.
Shoot at the highest resolution your phone or camera offers. The removal runs at the image's native size, and edges that look fine at full resolution stay fine when the marketplace scales the image down. The reverse is not true — a small, soft image cannot be sharpened afterwards.
Remove the background in the browser
Open the tool, drop the photo onto the upload area, and press Remove Background. The AI model downloads once on first use and then runs on your own device, so the photo itself never leaves your computer — relevant if you are photographing unreleased products.
When the result appears, inspect the edges at the places removal typically struggles: straps and handles with holes the model must cut through, transparent or glass parts, and any spot where the product colour matched the backdrop. Small leftovers are normal even from a good source photo.
That is what the manual eraser underneath the result is for. Set the brush small — 10 to 20 pixels for edge work — and rub out any background remnants the model missed. Every stroke can be undone with Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac), so it is safe to work quickly and step back when a stroke bites into the product.
Export for the marketplace you sell on
The download button produces a PNG with a transparent background at the original resolution. Transparent PNG is the most flexible master file: you can place it on white, on a brand colour, or in a seasonal banner without re-cutting anything.
Check the image rules of the marketplace you actually list on before uploading. Requirements differ — many platforms ask for a pure white background on the main listing image rather than transparency, and set minimum pixel sizes on the longest side. Verify the current rules in your seller dashboard; they change and vary by category. If a white background is required, place the transparent PNG over a white canvas in any editor — even presentation software can do this — and export as JPG or PNG at the required size.
Keep the transparent master file. When you need the same product on a different background next season, you start from the finished cut-out instead of redoing the work.
A repeatable batch workflow
When you have twenty products to process, consistency saves more time than speed. Photograph everything in one session with the same backdrop, camera position, and lighting, so every frame behaves the same way in removal. Then process the photos one after another in the same browser tab — the model is already loaded after the first image, so each additional photo only takes the compute time.
Name files before you start (sku-01.jpg, sku-02.jpg …). The tool appends a suffix to the downloaded file, so well-named sources come back out in an order your listing spreadsheet understands.

The tool is free, needs no account, and processes the image on your device.
